HOME ACCESSORIES - HOW MUCH IS TOO EXPENSIVE?
When perusing the latest magazines and websites I’m always on the look out for new and interesting accessories (and a tiny bit of furniture) that I could potentially add to our home and I’ve been really surprised with the outcome. The moodboard that I’ve put together has a definite cool pastel theme going on including mainly pinks, greens and turquoises - I’m obviously very drawn to this palette at the moment.
I find that I’m generally drawn to really bold colours, loud prints and lots of black and white, so this has actually been a good exercise for me as it's shown that my style is changing, still very cool with bold patterns though!
The Tom Dixon Bump vase is a personal favourite and I’m standing firm that this will be gracing a shelf in my home at some point in the future (containing a beautiful protea me thinks!) However it’s not exactly a steal priced at £120.
How do we decide if an item is just too expensive to buy? If something brings you a lot of pleasure in your home, and endless enjoyment, does that make the item really worth the price?
Me and my boyfriend are actually saving for our own house. We’ve been renting for many years and it’s something that we both feel is really important, particularly because you can do what you want to you own home, and don’t have a landlord to answer to! So you could say that splurging on items such as the Tom Dixon Bump vase isn’t high priority at the moment (which is what he tells me - and it’s true.)
I have been bought up with mantra that quality is better than quantity, so whatever I buy for my home or in general, I see the item as an investment rather than something that will ‘do the job’ or we can ‘replace later’. I don’t believe that this is a resourceful way to live, it’s wasteful and unsustainable. I don’t like the idea of high item turnover in my home, or my life. I believe in saving up for that special thing that you love most that you’ll treasure, that brings pleasure, lasts for years and evolves over time.
That said, I think the vase can wait for now, but there will be a time and a place for it :)
Take a look and see what you think, I’ve noted the items below so you can see where they’re all from.
