Get ready to Christmas Party like it’s 1990-something
Deck the halls with pink Christmas trees, neon wrapping and disco balls – this year I’m feeling a 90’s Christmas knees-up and it’s time to get the party started!
For my first Christmas at working at Holdens I wanted to create a bright, fun and colourful CGI to reflect the FUN, diverse, eclectic, vibrant team.
There’s a time and a place for a cohesive scheme, and in my opinion, Christmas is the right occasion to have some fun and go completely wild with a riot of colour and glitz, and just the right dose of bad taste!
John Lewis tinsel sales were up by 11% last year which is proof that we’re embracing a bit of a retro ‘chuck it all on’ kind of vibe and beginning to move away from the notion of a set colour palette.
Dan Cooper, the Christmas Buyer for John Lewis & Partners has said that they have consciously moved the 2019 John Lewis Christmas ranges away from the concept of a ‘traditional’ Christmas, as we consumers are placing more of a focus on our homes being unique and a truer representation of our personalities.
We’re adopting more of an ‘anything goes’ attitude when it comes to Christmas styling – the more audacious and unusual, the better. We’re out to impress, we’re fiercely competitive and we ‘style’ our tree to create the perfect image for Instagram as much as we do for ourselves and our families.
I set out to create a look that was totally Instagrammable, nostalgic, and to visually merge both the past and future. If you’ve been obsessed with the Argos Book of Dreams like me, (the retailer published online copies of their catalogues from 1974 as part of their 2019 Christmas campaign) then you must also love a dose of reminiscence, and that’s why I’ve included the plastic-fantastic Game Boy, Super Nintendo, gum ball machine and lava lamp – items taken straight from your 90’s Christmas list which visually give pops of different colours and textures.
And of course, I wanted to link all of these fun, fond memories to an interior space, which is why I’ve housed all of my Christmas goodies inside a snow globe. A curated collection of decorations from the John Lewis & Partners ‘Party’ range, Paperchase, Amara and Rockett St George sit alongside complementary pieces such as the Solar Chair by Bohinc Studio, Missoni fabrics and the Kartell Ghost Buster side table.
